Norton J. Cohen graduated from Wayne State University Law School in 1959. Upon graduation, he was appointed law clerk to Justice Carr of the Michigan Supreme Court.

He has served as Vice-Chair of the Equal Justice Council in Detroit and is a recipient of the Spirit of Detroit Award, given by the Detroit Common Council. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America and is a biographee in Who's Who in America. He is past chair of the Southfield Democratic Party and served on the executive board of the 1st Congressional District Democratic Party. He was inducted into the Michigan Workers' Compensation Hall of Fame.

Norton Cohen has engaged primarily in the practice of Workers' Compensation and Social Security Disability law since 1963. He was an advisor to the Michigan Legislature during the 1982-1983 legislative session dealing with Workers' Compensation; and he was special counsel on Workers' Compensation to the Michigan State AFL-CIO and its president, Sam Fishman. He presently is a member of the Advisory Council to the Director of the Michigan Workers' Disability Compensation Bureau. Mr. Cohen has lectured on workers' compensation, social security disability, Americans with Disability Act and the Family Medical Leave Act, both locally and nationally.

Cohen served as the Labor Co-Chair of the Workers' Compensation Committee of the American Bar Association Section on Labor and Employment Law from 1992-1996.
