Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder focus of new study

Gaining a greater understanding of brain disorders is an incredibly important pursuit. A major study is beginning which is aimed at learning more about two specific types of mental disorders: schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The study will be a cooperative effort between multiple research institutions, one of which is the University of Michigan. The study will involve a genetic analysis of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It is currently planned that this analysis will involve the study of the genetic material of some 10,000 individuals. The study is expected to go for four years. Around $16 million in grant money is going towards the study.

One wonders what the genetic analysis will uncover about bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Some of the hopes of the project are that the findings made during the study may be able to help researchers learn more about what individuals are particularly at risk of developing these brain disorders and may spur the development of better ways to treat these disorders.

Both of these mental disorders can subject their victims to a plethora of impactful symptoms. These symptoms can affect some very fundamental things for a person, including their ability to have a steady job.

Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other brain disorders may qualify an individual to receive Social Security Disability benefits, depending on how severe they are and how greatly they impair a person’s capacity for gainful activity. Gathering the appropriate medical records and information can be an important part of building a strong application for SSD benefits in relation to a mental disorder. Attorneys can provide guidance to brain disorder sufferers when it comes to SSD application preparation.
