Can skin conditions qualify for Social Security Disability?

You were working with your cleaning crew when you started to notice changes in your skin. You felt like you must have been chemical burned, but even after a few days, the area didn't get better.

Over time, the once-small rash began to grow. It spread all over, and then it began turning into lesions. Today, you're being treated for a staph infection that went out of control, but you can barely move. You may have to go through amputations and don't know what the outcome is going to be.

Can you seek disability benefits for skin-related illnesses or injuries?

In some cases, you may be able to. In the Social Security Administration's Blue Book, they state that extensive skin lesions, including those across multiple body sites and in critical areas, could help you qualify for Social Security Disability. These should seriously limit you. For example, lesions that interfere with the joints or lesions on the palms of your hands could be enough to help you obtain disability benefits.

Other symptoms, like pain and your reaction to the treatments given, will also play a role in your disability case. It's not possible to say for sure if you will be approved, but good medical support and information showing why you can't work is helpful.

Before your condition could be considered a skin disorder listing, you will need to be treated for at least three months. At that time, you may be able to seek disability and take steps toward getting your application approved. If it's denied, your attorney will be able to help with an appeal.
